At the time this is published, there are six House Republicans still vying for their conference’s secret ballot vote to become the next speaker candidate on the House floor. They made the case to their colleagues Monday night.
Here are the candidates:
- Jack Bergman (R-Mich.), a member of the Armed Services Committee and retired Marine lieutenant general
- Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), two-term media star of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who would be the first Black speaker
- Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), who’s “pitching himself as a unity candidate who will foster a culture of teamwork, communication and respect,” according to CQ, and currently has support from former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.). He received the most votes on the first ballot, CNN
- Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee
- Mike Johnson (R-La.), an Armed Services Committee member
- Austin Scott (R-Ga.), a member of the Armed Services and Intelligence committees
