Supplemental Spending Package Punted to January

December 20, 2023

With the Senate’s adjournment yesterday, Congress is on break until Jan. 8.

Senators were unable to reach an agreement this week on the border security provisions to include in a supplemental spending request that would also provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. They announced Tuesday those talks will resume in January.

The Biden administration has said it will be out of funding for Ukraine by the end of the month and spelled out how it will use the last $1 billion it has been appropriated, Defense News reported.

“Once these funds are obligated, the department will have exhausted the funding available to us for security assistance to Ukraine,” DOD Comptroller Mike McCord wrote Friday to the leaders of the Armed Services and defense appropriations committees. “It is essential that Congress act without delay on the administration’s pending supplemental request.”
