Senate Passes Aid Package; House May Not Consider It

February 13, 2024

The Senate passed a $95 billion national security package this morning that would send assistance to Ukraine, Israel and other allies, as The Washington Post and others reported.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) signaled Monday night that he will not bring the bill to the floor for a vote.

“In the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters,” Johnson said in a statement. “America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo.”

Johnson and other GOP leaders helped kill a version of the bill that included compromise border security provisions.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said he may use a discharge petition to get the bill to the floor, Newsweek reported. A discharge petition is a rare legislative tactic. Jeffries would need several Republicans to join Democrats in signing the petition, which would then force a vote on the measure.
