Foreign Affairs Chair McCaul: Speaker ‘Committed’ to Ukraine Aid

March 25, 2024

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said Sunday he thinks Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will bring a Ukraine aid bill to the floor when the House returns in two weeks.

“I believe he’s committed, because he understands national security,” McCaul told Margaret Brennan on CBS’ Face the Nation. “He leans on myself [and] the chairs of Armed Services and Intelligence for advice on this, and he knows how important this is.”

McCaul acknowledged Johnson is in “a difficult spot” with some hardline conservatives upset with him for making a deal last week to fully fund the government for the current fiscal year.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) introduced a motion to vacate Friday, the same procedural measure that led to then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) ouster last year. Greene has not said when she might force a vote on her motion, but she is among the House GOP’s leading voices against further support for Ukraine.
