Spending Bill Timing Gets Tighter

March 20, 2024

Negotiators reached an agreement earlier this week on six spending bills, including the defense spending bill. Staff are still working to formalize the deal in legislative text, which may happen today or be delayed until tomorrow, Punchbowl News reported.

House members may be asked to vote on it before the customary 72 hours to review the full text.

“The objective is to have it voted on before the end of the deadline [March 22],” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said. “So obviously we’re looking at Friday. No final decision has been made, but that’s what we’re looking at.”

The bill would then have to clear the Senate the same day to avoid a partial shutdown at midnight.
