Reed: Shanahan Broke Promise to Detail Wall-Impacted Milcon Projects

March 15, 2019

The top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee blasted Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan late Thursday night for failing to produce a list of military construction projects that will be impacted by prioritizing a southern border wall.
“I would like that list today, Mr. Secretary,” Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) had said during a hearing earlier in the day.
Shanahan had replied, “Sure.”
But just before midnight Eastern time, Reed said he had gotten word from Shanahan that the list would not be available.
“Diverting funds from our troops and military construction in order to pay for President Trump’s ineffective vanity wall is wrong,” Reed’s statement said. “It doesn’t make America safer. It hurts our troops, it hurts our military readiness, and it hurts taxpayers. I will continue working to make this list public, because the American people deserve to know the facts.”
