Fires Extinguished on Bonhomme Richard

July 16, 2020

After four days of burning aside Naval Base San Diego, all fires are currently out on assault ship Bonhomme Richard, Navy officials say.

“We did not know the origin of the fire,” said Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck. “We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.”

The fire began Sunday morning in the ship’s lower cargo hold, Military.com reports.

Firefighters were needed to contain the blaze over a four-day effort. The fire, which reached over 1,000 degrees, injured 40 sailors and 23 civilians.

The ship’s crew were able to reenter Thursday morning.

“We cannot make any conclusions until the investigation is complete,” said Sobeck.
