Army Announces Plans to Construct 65-Acre Firing Range on Fort Devens South Post

October 22, 2020

Work on the new site is expected to begin next spring and is scheduled to be completed by midsummer 2022, Harvard Press reports.

South Post Reserve Forces Training Area in Lancaster, Massachusetts covers about 4,700 acres. Environmental groups are concerned that the construction would affect local wetlands.

The Lancaster Conservation Commission, which is discussing the project, did not reach a decision on the project at last week’s meeting. It will continue the hearing until Oct. 27 or possibly Nov. 11.

Officials say that most of the construction would build on an existing firing range. The construction would involve clearing 18 acres of woodland, as well as moving about 30,000 cubic yards of soil.
