Rep. Luria: Climate Threats are ‘Persistent and Ongoing Problem’ at Bases

U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.) told ADC that extreme weather change and historic weather events are “persistent and ongoing problems” at the installations she represents in the Hampton Roads area and at others across the country.

“I think that our military leadership and our installation commanders understand the risks for these installations, especially with regard to sea level rise and recurrent flooding,” Luria told ADC’s Matt Borron Thursday in an ADC Live interview about a range of readiness issues. “But there’s just a continuous challenge with the resources that DOD has, operational versus installation.”

Luria, a member of the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee, said one challenge in planning for the impact is that sometimes joint use land studies do not account for federal property.

“In areas with large defense communities and large installations, we have to take into account that federal property, the economic impact of that federal property and also how that fits into any solution,” she said.
