Milley Drops Opposition to Sexual Assault Policy Reform

May 3, 2021

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley is open to changing the way the military investigates sexual assault, he said in a new interview with the Associated Press and CNN.

An independent panel recently recommended removing assault complaints from the chain of command, a reform approach that is also gaining steam on Capitol Hill.

Milley has long opposed that but said he is concerned by data that some service members still do not feel the system is fair.

“That’s a really bad situation if the enlisted force — the junior enlisted force — lacks confidence in their chain of command to be able to effectively deal with the issue of sexual assault.”
