New Law Sets National Standards for Spouse Licensure Reciprocity

January 9, 2023

President Biden on Thursday signed a new law to make it easier for military spouses to transfer their professional licenses and certifications when they move across state lines for a new duty assignment. The new law requires states to offer reciprocity and lays out basic requirements for the license transfer for most professions, except for lawyers, according to Military Times.

Many states have taken such action on their own, and DOD’s State Liaison Office has long worked to develop interstate compacts for license portability. Those compacts would take precedence over the new law.

It is estimated that about 39% of spouses have jobs that require state licenses or certifications.
