House Sends Resolution to Overturn Emergency Declaration to Senate

February 27, 2019

The U.S. House voted Tuesday to block President Trump from moving $3.6 billion from military construction to build a southern border wall. Thirteen Republicans joined all voting Democrats to pass the disapproval resolution 245-182, short of what would be needed to override a promised veto.
Among the Republicans bucking party leadership are Armed Services Committee members Mike Gallagher (Wis.) and Elise Stefanik (N.Y.), who is the top Republican on the Intelligence, Emerging Threats, and Capabilities Subcommittee.
All other Armed Services Republicans voted against the resolution, according to Roll Call analysis, including Ranking Member Mac Thornberry (Texas), who said in a statement he still wants “to prevent the diversion of essential military funds.”
