Spending Bill Conferees Say Deal Is Possible

February 3, 2019

House and Senate negotiators signaled optimism this weekend that they can reach a deal on homeland security in time to keep the government open when funding runs out Feb. 15.
Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said on CNN’s State of the Union that a deal is more likely if President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) leave the committee free to do its work.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) seemed to agree.
“In Washington, there’s Republicans, Democrats and there’s appropriators, both in the House and Senate,” Cuellar said on Fox News Sunday. “We can work out a deal. I know we can sit down and work it if we just don’t get any outside pressure.”
