As Trump Digs In, GOP Set to Defy Him on Border Emergency

March 14, 2019

The Republican-led Senate is expected to pass a resolution Thursday disapproving of President Trump’s emergency plan to divert military construction funds to build a southern border wall.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) floated a proposal to change the National Emergencies Act to allow emergency declarations to expire after 30 days, but both Trump and Democrats publicly shot that down.
Lee later became the fifth Republican to say he would vote for the proposal disapproving of the emergency, and several others are on the fence. Only four Republican votes are needed to pass the resolution if all Democrats vote together.
Trump has vowed to veto the resolution.
“I told Republican senators, vote any way you want. Vote how you feel good,” he told reporters Wednesday. “But I think it’s bad for a Republican senator.”
