The Pentagon has been pushing the White House and Congress to ease clean water standards, according to the Military Times, citing a New York Times report.
DOD faces costs of more than $2 billion to clean up PFAS-contaminated water on or around 126 installations.
Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said DOD wants to raise the amount of acceptable contamination to reduce the number of sites it needs to clean up.
A Pentagon spokeswoman said DOD does not want to skirt its responsibility, Military Times reported.
“DOD is not seeking a different or weaker cleanup standard but wants the standard risk-based cleanup approach that is based on science and applies to everyone,” DOD spokeswoman Heather Babb said.
