The Pentagon confirmed Tuesday that Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley has been formally nominated for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Military.com reported.
If confirmed to the post, Gen. Milley would replace Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, who will complete his four-year tenure this fall.
DOD also confirmed in a news release that Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, has been nominated as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has also gained momentum for a formal nomination to the top DOD post, the Washington Examiner reported.
Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) Tuesday told Shanahan, who has been under investigation for close ties to his former employer Boeing, that he believes he will soon be nominated to permanently replace Marine Corps. Gen. Jim Mattis, who resigned in late 2018.
“I just said I think it’s going to happen pretty quick now,” Inhofe said. “That’s a hope, not a prediction.”
