Kansas and Missouri Governors Activate National Guard for Storm Recovery

The governors of Kansas and Missouri activated National Guard troops Monday to help recover from severe weekend storms that brought intense regional flooding and tornadoes, The Kansas City Star reported.
The Missouri National Guard was called up to respond to the state’s flooded areas, while Kansas troops were assigned to assist 49 counties that are part of the state’s disaster area.
“As our state continues to recover from severe storms & damaging flooding, and local resources deplete, I am confident in the Guard’s capabilities to make a difference at this critical time,” Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) wrote in a tweet.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) requested federal funds Monday for shelter management, water rescues, human services support and other assistance.
“As we work with impacted communities, I want to ensure that every resource is being brought to bear to assist local emergency personnel so we can keep people safe and limit damage to property,” Kelly said in a statement.
The Army Corps of Engineers has also been assessing regional lake levels to monitor the potential threat of more flooding in the hard-hit states.
