In the newly enacted Defense Authorization Act, lawmakers asked the Pentagon to study whether the creation of a chief management officer position has been successful so Congress can determine whether to “disestablish the… position altogether,” Defense News reported.
The job has only existed for three years. The Senate last month confirmed Lisa Hershman to the post.
“I think everybody agrees we have to relook at that position,” said Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, according to Defense News. “We’re all grappling with how you have better management of the part of DOD that’s not the services — that was the hope, but it hasn’t worked out that way.”
