A pilot program from the Department of Veterans Affairs is helping veterans like San Antonio’s Gerald Bennett live in their own homes for longer.
“I have nobody down here, no relations,” Bennett, 92, a World War II veteran, told Texas Public Radio. “If it gets a little lonely, if I feel like I’m getting depressed, I’ll give Gloria a call. We’ll talk.”
Gloria Estrello lives nearby and is part of a federal program that connects vets with volunteers to keep them company and help them out around the house.
The Choose Home Senior Corps program was created last year by the VA and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The pilot will serve about 600 households over three years, Texas Public Radio’s Carson Frame reported.
It is also being tested in Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Glendive, Mont., and Pittsburgh, according to a press release.
