5G Prototyping and Experimentation to Begin at Four US Installations

February 28, 2020

The Pentagon announced at a recent House Armed Services Committee meeting that it will release a final request for proposal to industry on 5G testing at four U.S. military bases, Defense One reported.

The first sites will be based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; Hill Air Force Base, Utah; Naval Base San Diego; and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia.

The DOD is also trying to assert a claim over the mid-band spectrum to develop advanced weapon systems, a privilege telecom executives are contesting. “Private sector wants that. We need that,” said Defense Secretary Mark Esper. “We’re willing to share it.”
