Look Ahead: What’s Next on Capitol Hill

February 2, 2020

As the Senate’s impeachment trial starts to wrap up, here’s a look at some of the key dates in Washington over the next few months:

  • Tues., Feb. 4: President Donald Trump delivers the State of the Union address.
  • Weds., Feb. 5: The President’s impeachment trial is expected to conclude with likely acquittal.
  • Mon., Feb. 10: The administration delivers its budget request to Capitol Hill.
  • Mid-March: The administration has set this timeline for when it will participate in budget hearings, according to Breaking Defense.
  • Late April: House Armed Services Committee Chair Adam Smith (D-Wash.) is planning to mark up the defense authorization bill.
  • May: Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) told Breaking Defense he wants to finish the Senate’s version of the authorization bill by Memorial Day.
  • June: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) insists the House will consider all 12 spending bills before breaking for July 4, but it is a tall task. After the holiday, as the political conventions take place, the world focuses on the Olympics, and Election Day approaches, it becomes increasingly likely that unfinished appropriations work would have to wait until a lame duck session.
