Coronavirus: Pentagon Restricts Base Access, Travel and Exercises at Certain Locations

March 3, 2020

Defense Secretary Mark Esper outlined provisions to contain the spread of coronavirus on Monday, Federal News Network reported. Examples include all leave and liberty travel to and within CENTCOM.

“My number one priority remains to protect our forces and their families,” said Esper. “Second is to safeguard our mission capabilities, and third to support the inter-agency, whole-of-government approach. We will continue to take all necessary precautions to ensure our people are safe and able to continue their very important mission.”

The first U.S. service member was diagnosed with coronavirus on Feb. 25 at Camp Humphreys in South Korea. DOD officials say the department is working to create a vaccine for the virus.
