Lawmakers, DOD Officials Debate Military Health Clinic Changes

March 9, 2020

Members of the House Committee on Appropriations discussed the FY 2021 military health system budget recently, particularly about the plan to transition to Defense Health Agency management, reported military.com.

There are plans in progress to cut funding for staff and services, as well as not accepting retirees and military dependents.

“How [do] you expect us to do due diligence …. [or] appropriate necessary funds to reorganize the military’s treatment facilities when we haven’t seen a comprehensive, transparent plan from the department on what, when or how this restructuring will be implemented?” said Rep. Betty McCollum.

Meanwhile, Air Force Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg described the transformation as a “complicated merger of four cultures” and Army Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Scott Dingle called the process “extremely difficult.”
