Capitol Police Asks for Guard Support Ahead of Right-Wing Rally

September 16, 2021

The U.S. Capitol Police has formally asked DOD for National Guard presence at the Capitol for Saturday’s planned “Justice for J6” rally, an event organized to support the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol Jan. 6.

Pentagon Press Secretary Paul Kirby confirmed the request Wednesday but would not give reporters specifics such as the number of personnel requested.

Guard troops were called into help on Jan. 6 but not until hours after the security line was breached. Guard members from across the country patrolled the Capitol complex for months after.
