News Report: Temporary Housing Allowance Hike Coming Soon in 56 Regions

September 16, 2021

Many service members and military families hit hard by a surge in housing costs will get a temporary hike in their basic allowance for housing, according to a report published earlier this week by Military Times.

The report, based on internal DOD documents reviewed by the journalists, indicated that 56 areas in the U.S. would be impacted by an increase that would go into effect Oct. 1.

Military Times did not identify all the communities but listed five where DOD officials preliminarily determined service members would be eligible for the highest increase of 20%. Those areas are Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, California; Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; Boise, Idaho; Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho; and Spokane, Washington.

Housing allowances in the other regions would go up between 10% and 15%, the report said.
