Austin, Hicks Get Directly Involved in Hawaii Water Cleanup Efforts

December 14, 2021

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is “personally monitoring” efforts to clean up the drinking water on and around Joint Base Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii after a Navy storage facility leaked fuel into the water supply, as Military Times reported.

“My expectation is that military leaders in Hawaii will continue to do everything they can — as fast as they can — to return residents safely back to their homes and to communicate clearly and frequently the steps they are taking to do so,” Austin said Monday.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks will visit Hawaii this week to talk with Navy and local leaders, as well as military families, Austin said. She will also visit the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, where the leak occurred.
