The DOD inspector general has said Air Force officials followed proper procedures when they made the decision in late 2020 to move Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama.

Officials in Colorado – where SPACECOMM is currently based – have said for more than two years that the decision was politically motivated. DOD and Air Force officials have stood by the decision, saying it was based on a standard analysis of which region was best suited to host the site.

Former President Donald Trump seemed to undermine that position when he told an Alabama radio host after leaving office that he “single-handedly” made the decision to make the move.

The Government Accountability Office has also completed a review of the decision and will release a redacted version of its report in the “coming weeks,” a GAO spokesperson told media outlets. Some lawmakers have already seen the draft report.

“We’re all hoping to move forward with a final decision as quickly as we can,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told lawmakers last week, as Space News reported.
