GAO Says DOD Not Adequately Tracking Lead Exposure in Kids

July 27, 2022

A new Government Accountability Office report says there is not enough accountability to ensure the Department of Defense is tracking military children’s exposure to lead, as Military Times reported.

“Without oversight, [the Defense Health Agency] cannot ensure that pediatric lead screening, testing, treatment and reporting are being implemented consistently” across facilities, GAO auditors said in the July 26 report.

GAO recommended that DHA develop a more concrete plan to oversee adherence to its lead exposure guidelines.

“Checking the lead levels in military children is very important,” Kelly Hruska, government relations director for the National Military Family Association, told Military Times. “We all need to draw that line to readiness. The service member’s head is not going to be on the mission if they’re worried their children are being exposed to lead-based paint.”
