Commission’s Final Report Suggests Renaming 1100+ DOD Assets

September 26, 2022

The commission created by Congress to recommend renaming DOD assets named for Confederate leaders issued the third and final volume of its recommendations last week, with a list of more than 1,100 monuments, buildings, street names, Army vessels and other assets that it recommends renaming.

The report notes that the commission met with community leaders near each installation to assess “local sensitivities” and gather ideas for potential new names.

“Although community feedback was non-binding on the commission, it featured prominently in its deliberations and was instrumental to helping shape the focused lists of potential names as well for the final recommended name for each installation,” the report said.

The group’s first report recommended new names for nine Army bases, and the second volume suggested changes at the military academies, as The Hill noted.

Congress and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have to sign off on the recommendations before they can take effect.
