House GOP Bans Earmarks from Defense Spending Bill

March 2, 2023

Republican House leaders have said that individual members can no longer request earmarks in that chamber’s defense appropriations bill under new House rules. Appropriations Committee Chair Kay Granger (R-Texas) made the announcement this week, CQ reported.

“Community project funding” requests will also be barred in the Labor-HHS-Education the Financial Services bills. They will still be allowed in the bill that funds military construction and veterans affairs.

What remains to be seen is what would happen if Senate-passed earmarks made it into a defense appropriations conference report.

The defense portion of the most recent appropriations omnibus included $54 million in earmarks, according to CQ.
