McConnell Comes Out Against Defense Cuts

March 1, 2023

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday he won’t go along with a decrease in defense spending and also does not support freezing the defense budget, The Hill reported.

House Republicans, who want to attach overall budget cuts to a debt limit bill they are negotiating with the White House, have floated ideas for how to cut the defense budget. One is to cut the department’s civilian workforce.

McConnell, who is taking a back seat on the debt limit negotiations, made clear that he wants more defense spending, given threats from Russia and China.

“The defense budget ought to reflect the nature of the threat,” McConnell said. “In this environment, we need to continue to plus-up defense.”
