Biden to Broaden Military Spouse Employment Opportunities

June 9, 2023

During a visit today at Fort Liberty, North Carolina, President Biden is expected to sign an executive order expanding job opportunities for military spouses.

The executive order “will increase the number of federal jobs for which spouses receive preferential hiring treatment, speed up new savings accounts for military family child care expenses, and mandate a new government-wide plan for ways to help find work for spouses whose careers have been derailed by military moves and demands,” according to Military Times.

Service members often “question how long they can serve their country when their spouse is unemployed or feels unfulfilled,” First Lady Jill Biden told reporters Thursday. “We can’t ask our service members to choose between their love of country and their love of family.”

The White House hopes that the steps outlined in the executive order can be a model for private sector efforts to hire military spouses.
