After three weeks without a House speaker, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was selected for the position when Republicans backed him unanimously Wednesday.
“We’re going to find common ground,” Johnson said to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) at the beginning of remarks accepting the speakership. The promise got a standing ovation.
The House immediately got back to work. It overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning Hamas and backing Israel, as The Hill reported.
Then it began debate on the energy and water appropriations bill, which will continue today. If it passes, it would be the fifth fiscal year 2024 bill passed by the House. Stopgap spending runs out Nov. 17. Johnson has floated the idea of passing another stopgap bill to extend funding into January or April.
