The Pentagon outlined a new strategy Tuesday to incorporate artificial intelligence into all parts of the military. In a release, DOD said adopting the technology to stay ahead of other nations will rely on partners in the private sector and academia.
“We know that the department has to build a lot more expertise over the next decade of people that have the … skills that we are looking for,” said Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan, director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, The Hill reported. “Absent that sort of foundational level of expertise, commercial solutions are available for most of the problems that we’ve discovered in the past and we know we’ll discover in the future.”
A DOD fact sheet said “AI is poised to transform every industry and is expected to impact every corner of the Department, spanning operations, training, sustainment, force protection, recruiting, healthcare and many others.”
Senate Armed Services Chair Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) said AI is not a budget priority for him, because “there are other things that need to be done first.,” The Hill reported.
