Administration Initiatives Will Help Communities Fight Homelessness Among Veterans

The administration is investing $3.1 billion in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care program to help fight homelessness. Community groups and local governments can apply for the grants. Part of the HUD funding will trickle down to local Veterans Affairs facilities to serve homeless veterans, as The Hill reported.

VA also last week announced a new $11.5 million Legal Services for Veterans grant program to help individuals fight eviction orders, gain access to financial support programs or get similar legal support.

“Legal support can be the difference between becoming homeless in the first instance or having a safe, stable house,” VA Secretary Denis McDonough said, as Military Times reported. “With this, we move ever closer to that goal.”

A third new initiative from the administration is a $58 million grant program to connect homeless veterans with job opportunities in in-demand industries in local communities. That program is through the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service.
