OLDCC Releases Annual State-by-State Spending Report

September 28, 2023

The DOD Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation this week released its annual report on the level of defense spending by state. The assessment will “help states and communities better understand how defense procurement, personnel spending and grants impact their economies,” according to a press release.

“[T]he report highlights how the department is expanding our relationships with industries not traditionally associated with defense and serves as a tool for state and local partners to identify new partnership opportunities,” said Radha Plumb, deputy under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.

The states with the most defense spending in fiscal year 2022 were:

  1. Virginia
  2. Texas
  3. California
  4. Florida
  5. New York
  6. Maryland
  7. Connecticut
  8. Pennsylvania
  9. Massachusetts
  10. Arizona

“The contract and personnel data in this report presents governors, local officials and other leaders with topline information to help them better understand the key role businesses and industries play supporting our nation’s defense,” OLDCC Director Patrick O’Brien said. “States and localities should use this data to identify opportunities to build and strengthen key supply chains, further develop workforce skills, and enhance and improve our military installations and defense industrial base to make them more resilient and competitive.”
