Lawmakers Praise Spouses for Speaking Up on Housing Concerns

December 5, 2019

Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Md.) told executives of top private on-base housing companies that he is concerned that poor housing conditions only came to light when military families spoke up.
“The Pentagon didn’t come to Congress and say, ‘We have a problem.’ You didn’t come to Congress and say, ‘We have a problem,’” he told the executives during a Thursday hearing, Military Times reported. “Instead, military families got squeezed. It was military spouses who stepped up. That’s a shame on you, and a shame on the Pentagon.”
During tough questioning, the executives outlined steps they are taking to improve housing conditions, adjust their internal policies and compensate some military families.
