Readiness Subcommittee Proposes Investments in Infrastructure, Quality of Life of Personnel

June 23, 2020

The Committee on Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness released its proposal for the FY21 NDAA on Monday, with a markup to be live streamed on Tuesday, June 23 at 3:00pm ET.

The committee authorized appropriations for military construction, family housing and BRAC cleanup activities. Improvements to military family housing has been proposed across all branches, with U.S. Air Force funding not to exceed $94 million and Navy funding for existing housing units at $37 million.

With privatized military family housing being a topic of conversation, the subcommittee proposed a standardization of metrics to evaluate private housing providers and provide oversight to the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI).

PFAS remediation and cleanup was addressed in the proposal. Specifically, the committee requires DoD to notify where PFAS-containing fire agent was released, establishing a prize to find a replacement for the firefighting that does not contain PFAS, and “ensure that all National Guard installations are eligible for funding under the Defense Environmental Restoration Account for PFAS remediation.”
