With No Debt Deal Yet, House Leaves for Holiday Break

May 25, 2023

House members will head back to their districts for the planned Memorial Day district work period Thursday evening, as House Republicans and the White House continue negotiating a deal to raise the debt limit.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Thursday morning that he thinks talks are moving in the right direction toward a potential deal, CNN reported.

If a deal is reached, House members will be called back to vote on it. If one isn’t reached, passed in both chambers and signed into law by June 1, the nation will begin to default on its debts for the first time.
