Potential Impeachment Inquiry Could Complicate Stopgap Spending Talks

September 12, 2023

The House returns to session today with 18 days left in the fiscal year and no stopgap spending bill ready to prevent an Oct. 1 government shutdown.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) hopes to pass a defense appropriations bill this week, but it’s not clear whether the far-right part of his conference will allow it to come for a vote, Punchbowl News reported.

Punchbowl News also reported, along with others, that McCarthy is expected this week to endorse an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Fellow House Republicans have been pushing for that, but it changes the dynamics for negotiating a spending agreement with the White House and Senate Democrats.

The Senate this week is considering three spending bills, including the military construction-VA measure.
