Senate GOP Likely to Stall Ukraine/Border Bill

February 6, 2024

It appears Senate Republicans will oppose speedy passage of a negotiated bill to secure the border and provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as Punchbowl News reported this morning:

A number of GOP senators came out against the proposal on Monday. They ranged from the Senate Republican Conference’s most conservative members to defense hawks who want to see Ukraine funded. Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s [R-Ky.] leadership team and some of his closest allies rejected the package.

The lead Republican negotiator, Sen. James Lankford (Okla.) has said the bill is being misinterpreted.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to close our open border and give future administrations the effective tools they need to stop the border chaos and protect our nation,” Lankford said in a statement when the bill was released Sunday.
