Senate Republicans are putting pressure on the House GOP to agree to a spending bill and avert a government shutdown that would start this weekend.
“Shutting down the government is harmful to the country. And it never produces positive outcomes — on policy or politics,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned on the Senate floor Tuesday, according to The Hill.
There is no final compromise spending bill yet to address the four appropriations bills that are set to expire Friday night. The remaining accounts, including defense, are set to expire March 8.
Some in House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) conference want to add conservative policy riders that would almost definitely sink the bill and shut down at least part of the government.
“If the House can figure out a way to process [the bills], we can get this done by the end of the week, but that’s going to be probably in their court,” Senate Republican Whip John Thune R-S.D.) said.
