Senators Unveil Deal on Border Security, Foreign Aid; Test Vote this Week

February 5, 2024

A group of Senate negotiators released a long-negotiated border security measure Sunday, and the Senate is scheduled to take a procedural vote this week. The same bill includes aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, according a bill summary.

Punchbowl News reported this morning:

But the bill’s release Sunday night was like pouring gasoline on the fire that is the Senate GOP internal war. Senators and aides publicly and privately questioned whether a majority of the Republican Conference would back it, a key metric. There were even calls for an immediate leadership change from some GOP senators and conservative outside groups.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) said Sunday the Senate compromise is not acceptable to the House. Johnson unveiled a standalone bill Sunday that would send $17.6 billion to Israel.
